Exhibition

Traces d'outils – tool marks focuses on what gives an etching its distinctive character: the visible traces of its making.

Every line, every score, every area of tonal build-up bears witness to the direct interaction between tool, printing plate, and the artist’s hand. Rather than concealing these marks, the works embrace them as an integral part of their visual language, lending each print depth, materiality, and a striking physical presence.

The exhibition brings together selected works from several series created over recent years. Human figures, animals, and architectural fragments inhabit a visual world defined by bold black-and-white contrasts, finely graduated tonal values, and richly textured surfaces. Removed from their original context, these motifs become autonomous visual signs that invite viewers to form their own associations.

Every etching is produced entirely by hand using a fully analogue process. Each work belongs to a small, strictly limited edition, preserving the immediacy of traditional intaglio printmaking.

.

The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover etching as a thoroughly contemporary medium, to follow the traces left by the artist’s tools, and to engage with images that do not reveal themselves at first glance, but unfold new layers of meaning with every encounter.

Alexander Pitzius looks forward to meeting visitors, discussing his working process, and offering insights into his artistic practice and creative world.

Info

Alexander Pitzius (1981) lives and works in Saarland, Germany. After studying fine arts and German studies at the University of Koblenz, he has devoted himself, alongside his work as an art educator, to contemporary printmaking.

Etching lies at the centre of his artistic practice. Working with modern thermoplastic printing plates, he continues to develop the medium through a consistently analogue process. His works are produced in small, strictly limited editions and have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and galleries.

His practice combines technical precision with a strong sensitivity to texture and a restrained, iconic visual language.
