RASCHPËTZER-QANAT in Helmsange

Mia and Emil are super excited because today they’re going to discover something really cool. At the parking lot, Grandma shares the secret: “Today, we’re going to explore the Raschpëtzer Qanat!” “A Rasch…pana…what?” Emil asks curiously.
Dad smiles and explains: “The Rasch-pëtzer Qa-nat is an underground tunnel. It was built almost 2,000 years ago!”

Mia looks amazed and reads the sign near the water pool: “That old? Wow! It’s like a giant secret adventure tunnel under the ground!” And it’s true – right under the family’s feet is a big system of tunnels and shafts. It is built so cleverly that water still flows through it today.

Mom adds: “It helped bring water from a spring to the villages. Pretty smart, right?” Everyone is excited and dares to step into a part of the underground qanat.

INFOS & EXTRAS

Raschpëtzer - The Qanat in Helmsange

A qanat is an underground system that carries fresh water through wells and tunnels. This one is very well preserved — and it’s the biggest of its kind north of the Alps! The Raschpëtzer-Qanat was built a long time ago, in ancient times, by very clever engineers. It brought water to a big villa — and it still works today!

Hike: Guttland.Trail Raschpëtzer

This trail starts and ends at Walferdange train station. It takes you through the special nature reserve called “Sonnebierg,” along old railway tracks, and past former gypsum mines. The highlight of the walk? The amazing Raschpëtzer-Qanat, of course! The full trail is 5.9 km long and takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. If you want to walk less, there’s a shorter version that’s 4.4 km.
